AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS
WINTER ANNUAL MEETING

The Winter Annual Meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers was held in Boston, Massachusetts on December 13-18, 1987. The Rail Transportation Division sessions featured a full day of technical papers and a panel discussion on railroad bearing performance. The specific areas addressed were: Railroad Bearing Final Failure, Journal Burn-off Mechanics and Dynamics, and Failure Progression - Prevention - Detection.

The following papers may be of particular interest to persons involved with the specification, purchase, operation, and maintenance of journal roller bearings:

  1. "Analysis of Journal Roller Bearing Failure at FAST on May 29, 1986." R. Lawrence, R. McCowan, J. Leary and G. Moyar. (Paper 87-WA/RT-14)*
  2. "Railroad Journal Roller Bearing Failure and Detection - Past, Present and Future." M.C. Fec and G.J. Moyar (Paper 87-WA/RT-5)
  3. "A Statistical Overview of Bearing Life." T. S. Guins (Paper 87 WA/RT-10)
  4. "Railroad Bearing Performance Under the Wheel Impact Load Environment." S.R. Williams, D.R. Ahlbeck, and H.D. Harrison (Paper 87-WA/RT-1)
  5. "Acoustical Detection of Railroad Roller Bearing Defects." R.L. Florom, A.R. Hiatt, J.E. Bambara, and R. Smith (Paper 87-WA/RT-11)

* Paper Number 1 may be obtained free upon request from BRENCO, Incorporated

Papers number 2 - 5 can be purchased through:

AAR APPROVES REMOVAL OF CAP SCREW SEAL RINGS FROM BEARING ASSEMBLY

Effective May 1, 1988, the Association of American Railroads - Mechanical Division has prohibited the application of cap screw seal rings in bearing assemblies. Research performed by BRENCO provided the basis for Roller Bearing Manufacturer's Engineer's Committee recommendations to the AAR to improve bearing performance. Elimination of the cap screw seal ring increases the effective clamping force on the bearing. Increased clamp reduces the possibility of the bearing components loosening in service and causing overheating and failure.
