Circular Letter
(c-9193)
Subject: Implementation of Revisions to Section G, Part II, Rule 1K17
TO THE MEMBERS AND PRIVATE CAR OWNERS File Number: TW-24.7
In Circular Letter c-9153, dated June 6, 2000, comments were solicited concerning proposed revisions to MSRP, Section G, Part II, Rule 1K17. No comments have been received and the revisions were approved. The following revisions are effective September 1, 2000.
RULE 1K17 Locking plates shall be stamped with the following information. The minimum character size shall be 1/8" (0.125", 3mm). If the characters are pin punched, the punch marks must overlap.
If new, the capital letter "N", month and year of bearing manufacture (mm/yy), and company/shop identification marks of mounting shop. The month and year of the bearing manufacture is the same as stamped on the outside of the bearing cup.
OR
If reconditioned, the capital letter "R", month and year of bearing reconditioning (mm/yy), and company/shop identification marks of bearing reconditioning shop. And company/shop identification marks of the mounting shop if different from reconditioning shop.
NOTE: See latest AAR Circular Letter for listing of wheel shop reporting marks and shop locations.
In instances where end caps and locking plates only are removed, all of the information from the removed locking plate shall be transferred onto the new applied locking plate. The transferred information must be stamped, or legibly etched, with a minimum character size of 1/8" (0.125", 3mm). In addition, the company/shop identification marks of the company/shop removing and reapplying the end cap must be applied to the new locking plate along with the date of replacement (mm/yy) and the capital letters "EC" to denote End Cap removal. Refer to Figure 4.57.
NOTE: To ensure that the original mounting shop maintains accountability for journal size and condition, end cap removal information should be applied in addition to, rather than in place of mounting shop information. The letter EC serve to prevent confusion in the field as to what information represents original bearing mounting and what information represents end cap removal only.
This is your authority to update Section G, Part II, Rule 1K17. These revisions will be included in the next revision of the manual.
Sincerely,
Thomas Stahura
