Gentlemen:
In order to provide for a more effective and viable exterior means for identifying and recalling railroad car roller bearings by manufacturer or reconditioner, and by date of manufacture or reconditioning, the AAR Wheels, Axles, Bearings and Lubrication Committee, is revising Section G-II, Rule 1K17 as shown below:

Rule 1K17 For identifying shops mounting bearings, railroad initials or in the case of carbuilders or contract shops, company marks (See Figure 4.47) will be stamped or etched on locking plates.

Rule 1K17 For identifying shops mounting bearings, railroad initials or, in the case of carbuilders or contract shops, company marks (See Figure 4.47) will be stamped or etched on locking plates. In addition, locking plates will be stamped or etched with an N (new) or R (reconditioned), month and year to designate date of manufacture or reconditioning, and reconditioning shop marks if different from mounting shop marks.
Effective April 15, 1988, all locking plates applied on or after this date shall be in accord with the provisions of RULE 1K17 as revised..
