SUBJECT: Rescinds Requirement to Magnetic Particle Test New Axles

Please refer to Circular Letter c-8171, date April 29, 1994. This Circular Letter notified the industry of the requirement for magnetic particle testing of journal portions of new axles before remounting. The Letter also noted that this provision would become effective January 1, 1995.

In Circular Letter c-8230, date June 30, 1995, the industry was advised that these changes would be held in abeyance, pending review of comments received.

The Wheels, Axles, Bearings and Lubrication Subcommittee reconsidered this requirement at their recent meeting. With the approval of the Car Engineering Committee, the requirement for magnetic particle testing of journal portions of new axles before remounting was rescinded.
