TO MEMBERS AND PRIVATE CAR OWNERS
Two member railroads have reported hotbox setouts of recent vintage roller bearings manufactured by Hyatt Manufacturing.
The car builder, manufacturer and roller bearing mounting shop have identified 92 recently built pellet hoppers cars equipped with a total of 720 suspect bearings. AAR is investigating the problem with the manufacturer. In the interim, we have decided to err on the side of safety and remove all Hyatt Certificate #6B roller bearings in the above listed cars from interchange service. Do not remove roller bearings with other certificate #s except for Field Manual Rule 36 defects.

Early Warning 136 is being assigned Severity Level A (Stop Car Load or Empty, DO NOT MOVE: contact owner) in accordance with Exhibit AA of the UMLER Specification Manual. Replace the wheelsets using Why Made Code 25 (owners request) for the roller bearings and Why Made Code 11 (unless defects are found) for the wheels and axle. In addition to car initial and number, why made code and repair date per Rule 41.E.20, please mark the bearing cups with the wheel location under the car
(R-1, L-4, etc.) and EW-136 with crayon at the time of wheelset removal.
Repairing lines are requested to attach all condemnable (per Rule 37) adapters to the wheelset journal when returning the wheelset to the wheelshop.
Report repaired cars to Mr. John Kieres, Manager of Railroad Relations & Accounting, Union Tank Car Company at (312) 431-5084, FAX: (312) 347-5780 and he in turn will update the UMLER file to remove the car from the Early Warning list.
