Subject: Journal Roller Bearing Cap Screws

Gentlemen:

Recognizing recent research which revealed that Grade 5 cap screws produced an inconsistent clamp load due to an oxide film on the threads and the latest revision to Section H, Specification S-703-71, Note 3 (published in circular letter c-7440, dated November 30, 1989), the Wheels, Axles, Bearings and Lubrication Committee determined that effective June 1, 1990 all newly ordered journal roller bearing cap screws must be SAE Grade 2.
