AAR Circular Letter

Subject: Locking Plate Stenciling
To: Members and Private Car Owners

TWBL-18C
(c-7475)

Gentlemen:

Recognizing the increasing amount of required stenciling on journal roller bearing locking plates and in order to provide requisite space for this stenciling, Section H, Standard S-701-77 has been revised to require that all journal roller bearing and locking plate manufacturers stenciling information be placed on the back of the locking plate. This revision is permissible immediately and mandatory for those locking plates stenciled and manufactured as of October 1, 1990.

This change does not supersede or modify the current stenciling requirements specified in Section G-Part II, Rule 1K17 for identifying shops mounting bearings including front stenciling of date of manufacture and/or reconditioning of the bearing. Revisions to the appropriate Manual of Standards and Recommended Practices are being processed by the AAR Wheels, Axles, Bearings and Lubrication Committee.

Sincerely,

Leavitt A. Peterson
