SUBJECT: Disposition of AAR Proposals: Use of Lubricated SAE Grade 5 Roller Bearing Cap Screws

TO: Members and Private Car Owners Roller Bearing Manufacturers and Reconditioners

GC-1463
TWBL-23A
(c-7384)

Gentlemen:

Circular letter c-7366 dated March 31, 1989 solicited the comments of interested parties on a list of six measures intended to swiftly implement the use of lubricated SAE Grade 5 Roller Bearing Cap Screws as the industry standard. It is clear from the response submitted that the first five items of the action proposals must be re-examined; and consequently the requirements and the effective dates tendered therein are hereby rescinded.

However, the provisions applicable to secondhand cap screws (item 6 of c-7366) are in effect as follows:

Secondhand cap screws being applied in complete wheel sets may immediately be lubricated (threads
and underside of the cap screw head
) with either AAR M-942 Journal Roller Bearing Grease, AAR M-963
Journal Box Lubricating Oil (car oil), or equivalent lubricant that does not promote flash rusting; and
these cap screws must be so lubricated whenever applied after June 1, 1989.

The Mechanical Division General Committee will consider all recommendations received regarding the proposed use of SAE Grade 5 cap screws in determining final disposition; and results will be published via future circular letter.

Sincerely,

Leavitt A. Peterson
